Most people come to the Kimberley looking for spectacular scenery and unique outback experiences. The Kimberley offers so many stunning places that it can be hard to know where to begin your adventure.
Purnululu National Park, home of the Bungle Bungle Range, is the Kimberley’s only World Heritage area and so it has to take its place at the top of the list.
How to get to the Bungle Bungles
To get into Purnululu National Park, you can drive or fly. The road is only suitable for 4WD vehicles and takes 2 -3 hours to drive the 53 km into the park from the Great Northern Highway. If you have the time and the inclination to adventure in by road, it is absolutely worth it. The drive, whilst slow, is really picturesque and a very enjoyable journey. Broome is a 944km from the Bungle Bungle, therefore it’s not a day tour option from Broome. There are daily flights from Broome to Kununurra with Airnorth and you can then take one of a range of scenic flights or day tours into the Bungle Bungle from Kununurra.
The turn off from the Great Northern Highway is 108km north of Halls Creek or 251km south of Kununurra. The road is called Spring Creek Track. The drive initially takes you through Mabel Downs Station. There is a caravan park at the junction of Spring Creek Track and the Great Northern Highway called Bungle Bungle Caravan Park, but it’s not in the Bungle Bungle, it is on Mabel Downs. There is still 53km to drive.
You can fly into Purnululu by light aircraft departing from Kununurra or Warmun. There are Bungle Bungle scenic flights by plane or helicopter that land in Purnululu to connect to Bungle Bungle Guided Tours. This is a truly wonderful way to view the Bungle Bungles as the Kimberley really does hide her secrets well until you take to the air. Kununurra has Australia’s best scenic flight operators with Aviair and HeliSpirit having gained places in Tourism’s Hall of Fame for their award winning scenic air tours. Find out more about the fly-in tours on our Bungle Bungle Guided Tours page here.
