Bungle Bungle Guided Tours offer a few different types of walks that range in difficulty and terrain. Each guided walk is unique as it explores a different part of the Bungle Bungle Range. The three main areas that are covered are Cathedral Gorge, Echidna Chasm and Piccaninny Gorge. Piccaninny Gorge though is a hike that is not for the faint hearted. This walk is generally only tackled by seasoned hikers who want a challenge.
The hike up Piccaninny Gorge is a 10km return walk is through the rocky river bed and is classed as a level 5 hike. The Helicopter will pick you up from the Bellburn Airstrip/ HeliSpirit Base and fly over the range to the Piccaninny base camp. Once you are here you are dropped off and guided in a small group up Piccaninny Gorge.
Included in this hike is a packed picnic lunch, morning and afternoon tea and complimentary cold water through-out the trip. Before and after the hike, you will receive a spectacular scenic helicopter flight over the sandstone domes.
Another option that a few people decide to take is to skip the helicopter flight and commence a 3-day hike into Piccaninny Gorge. This option obviously requires a significant amount of preparation and planning. The harsh environment and weather of the Kimberley is something that should not be under-estimated, so anyone deciding to venture into Piccaninny on the extended hike should organise with others.
This area of the Kimberley is extremely unique and by exploring the chasms and gorges of the Bungle Bungle Range you get a strong appreciation of harsh environment and the difference between the outside of the range compared to inside the gorges. Due to the nature of the gorges, the climate is relatively cool and damp, which produces exquisite plants that grow in the wetter areas out of the warm weather. Once you are in the flat terrain, short dry grasses as amass.
The remoteness of the area is also a factor that brings many people to visit. The untouched environment that has been home to the indigenous people of Australia for over 20,000 years is not something that can easily be found in this day and age. If you have an appreciation for the natural environment and want to experience a unique formation not seen anywhere else, then the Bungles and the Piccaninny Gorge hike is one for your bucket list.
You can drive from Kununurra to the Bungle Bungles or fly in a scenic fixed-wing plane or helicopter for Kununurra or Warmun.
